Tourism booms across China during Spring Festival holiday

      2025-01-30 22:17 Last Updated At:01-31 01:17

Tourist destinations across China have reported an increased number of visitors during this Spring Festival holiday compared to previous years.

Data from online travel platforms showed that on Tuesday and Wednesday, the first two days of the ongoing eight-day holiday, travel bookings increased by more than 30 percent compared with the same period last year, with over 70 percent year-on-year growth in bookings for entrance tickets and car rentals, and double-digit growth in booking for air tickets, hotels, train tickets and homestay services.

On Dec 4, 2024, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) inscribed the social practices of the Chinese people in celebration of the Spring Festival on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, which encouraged many to travel during the holiday to explore the culture and experience the festive atmosphere for themselves.

In east China's Jiangsu Province, Wuxi City attracted large numbers of tourists after it was chosen as a sub-venue for this year's CMG Spring Festival Gala broadcast to showcase its cultural allure, while another famous city, Suzhou, also welcomed flocks of visitors to its well-known tourist spots such as the Suzhou Museum and the Humble Administrator's Garden.

Jiangsu's neighboring province of Zhejiang received 13.79 million tourists in the first two days of the holiday, up 12 percent year-on-year.

One of the most significant trends in China's tourism market during this year's Spring Festival is the surge in cross-regional travel, with people in the country's southern parts going to northern provinces to experience snow and ice activities, and people from the northern parts spending the holiday in warmer southern regions to escape the winter cold.

One of the most popular destinations is Harbin City in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province. The Harbin Ice-Snow World, a winter wonderland featuring snow sculptures and structures made with ice bricks, has welcomed more than two million visitors this year, setting a new record.

Warm weather resorts in Sanya, Lijiang, Beihai and other southern cities are popular destinations for people from the north.

Boosted by China's extension of its visa-free policy, facilitation of entry visas and UNESCO's listing of the Spring Festival as an intangible cultural heritage, inbound tourism continued to grow during this year's holiday season.

Major entry ports in Beijing, Shanghai and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area are all experiencing peak flows of inbound passengers, with most visitors coming from Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia.

"We are so happy to be here and share the Chinese New Year with you guys. It was an incredible visit for us. My family and I, we enjoyed it a lot," said Hadis, a tourist from Iran.
