Three Israeli hostages freed from Gaza as detainee swap continues

      2025-01-31 12:24 Last Updated At:16:57

Three more Israeli hostages on Thursday were released from the Gaza Strip as the detainee swap between Israel and Hamas got underway under the ongoing Gaza ceasefire.

The day's exchange began with the release of Agam Berger, a 20-year-old Israeli soldier captured during Hamas's Oct. 7 attack on the Nahal Oz base. Footage showed her in a khaki uniform emerging from damaged buildings in Jabalia, northern Gaza, before being transferred to Israeli custody.

In Khan Younis, southern Gaza, Hamas released two more Israelis - Arbel Yahoud, 29, and Gadi Mozes, 80, - along with five Thai agricultural workers.

The release in Khan Younis was temporarily delayed due to a large crowd of Palestinians gathered at the handover site. Eventually, the two Israeli captives were escorted through the crowd by Hamas members and sent away in vehicles provided by the Red Cross.

Gazan people at the scene expressed their desire for peace and condemned Israel for launching genocide.

"We are people who demand peace, not war or genocide, which Israel is committing with the support of some countries. We wish to have the right to live like other people, in an independent state with sovereignty and our legitimate rights," said a Gazan.

"The Palestinian people will never give up this land because we are its owners," said another Gazan resident.

Israeli authorities said 110 Palestinian prisoners were also freed on Thursday after their release was delayed due to scenes of chaos at a hostage handover in southern Gaza.

Tech IPOs surge in China's A-share, HK markets amid innovation boom

      2025-02-27 17:31 Last Updated At:18:27

Sci-tech companies have accounted for a significant share of IPOs on both China's A-share and Hong Kong markets this year, highlighting the growing focus on technological innovation.

China's Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) has approved six companies to go public in the past 14 days, marking a significant increase in new listings.

According to Wind Economic Database (EDB), 13 new companies have listed on China's A-shares this year, as of Sunday. A significant 77 percent of the year's total listings come from these companies, which were listed on the STAR Market, ChiNext Board, and Beijing Stock Exchange.

Many of these new listings have performed well on their debut, with investor enthusiasm for new listings on the rise.

Meanwhile, EDB data showed that in Hong Kong, another consumer services company went public in the past two weeks. As of Tuesday, there have been nine new IPOs on the Hong Kong market this year.

"Sectors such as consumer goods, science and technology, industrials, and healthcare dominate the listings, with a strong emphasis on technology. In terms of fund usage, focus areas include expanding overseas sales, enhancing supply chain, and research and development capabilities. This reflects the growing trend of companies leveraging international financing platforms for development in the global market. It also highlights how regulatory bodies have actively supported qualified domestic companies to list overseas, and allow them to better utilize resources in both domestic and international markets. The increasing number of high-quality Chinese mainland companies listing in Hong Kong also boosts the appeal of the Hong Kong stock market globally, allowing international investors to share in China's growth opportunities," said Li Yan, managing director of the capital markets department of the investment bank China International Capital Corporation Limited (CICC) in Hong Kong.

Inaugurated in June 2019, the STAR market was designed to support companies in the high-tech and strategic emerging sectors.

The ChiNext Index tracks China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises.
