Xi stresses advancing Peaceful China Initiative to higher level

      2025-03-01 20:11 Last Updated At:03-02 14:57

Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, underscored efforts to promote the Peaceful China Initiative to a higher level when he presided over a group study session of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee on Friday in Beijing.

He called for continuous efforts to make the country safer, the society more orderly, the governance more effective, and the people more satisfied.

Thanks to the constant efforts of the CPC Central Committee to enhance leadership and systems in national security since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012, China has successfully written a new chapter marked by the twin miracles of rapid economic growth and long-term social stability, Xi said.

To adapt to the development and changes of the situation and tasks, the building of a Peaceful China can only be strengthened, not weakened, Xi noted.

He stressed a holistic approach to national security, a major guideline for advancing the Peaceful China Initiative to a higher level, should be resolutely followed.

Party committees and governments at all levels should work to lay a solid foundation for the country's long-term stability by promptly and effectively addressing security issues, he said.

The Peaceful China Initiative is for the people and by the people, Xi said, adding it is essential to improve people's well-being, solidly promote common prosperity, earnestly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of the people, and maintain social fairness and justice.

Xi stressed that preventing and resolving all kinds of risks is an important task of the Peaceful China Initiative. He underlined the need to put the protection of national political security first and resolutely safeguard the security of China's state power, systems, and ideology.

Xi called for strengthened work in fields such as disaster prevention and mitigation, cyberspace security, artificial intelligence security and more, with focus on preventing risks in key areas.

Xi highlighted efforts to improve crime prevention and control, and to promote the law-based handling of public complaints.

Xi stressed the need to maintain the CPC Central Committee's absolute leadership over national security and legal work and use modern scientific and technological means to make social governance more effective.

Li Yan, vice president and professor of the Southwest University of Political Science and Law, shared her understanding and suggestion on advancing the Peaceful China Initiative during the group study session.

Shopping malls in Shanghai adapt to cater to growing 'silver economy'

As China's elderly population grows, shopping malls in Shanghai have actively adapted part of their services to cater to the needs and preferences of elderly consumers, tapping into silver-haired consumer market.

This trend reflects the city's efforts to enhance elderly care services amid the population aging. By the end of 2023, people aged 60 and older reached 5.68 million in Shanghai, representing a whopping 37.4 percent of the city's total population.

A shopping mall on the downtown Nanjing East Road pedestrian street has opened a dedicated club for senior citizens, offering a diverse range of activities from the operation of health workshops to traditional handicraft classes.

"I gain a lot every time I come here. I can participate in various club activities and also exchange knowledge and everyday life hacks with others," said Fu Meilin, an elderly resident.

The mall houses nearly 60 time-honored brands, along with dining and entertainment options suited to senior citizens.

Another business district in Shanghai's Putuo District has adopted a different approach, focusing on attracting retirees during weekdays while catering to younger shoppers on weekends.

Restaurants offer affordable off-peak meal deals priced under 100 yuan (about 13.88 U.S. dollars), attracting a large number of senior customers.

To ensure a convenient and enjoyable shopping experience for the elderly, many shopping malls have conducted age-friendly renovations, including providing comfortable seating areas, accessible restrooms, and consumer guidance services for the elderly shoppers.

Driven by the population aging, China's "silver economy" has shown vast growth potential, with the market currently estimated at around seven trillion yuan and projected to reach a 30 trillion yuan by 2035.
