A Chinese mainland spokesman has compared the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world's leading contract chipmaker, to a 'piece of meat on a chopping block' while stating the Taiwan authorities' continued efforts to "sell out" Taiwan goes against the interests of the people.
At a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday, Chen Binhua, spokesman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, commented on the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities continued pandering to the United States.
Reports have circulated that U.S. President Donald Trump has been pressuring TSMC to increase its investments in the U.S., raising public concern on the island over the growing trend of TSMC not only shifting its manufacturing processes but also gradually transferring high-end research and development operations to the U.S. Meanwhile, a recent visit by Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs to Taiwan has further fueled concerns about the outflow of investments and supply chain resources from TSMC to the United States.
Amid these developments, Chen said the DPP's attitude towards TSMC and its increasing willingness to bend to U.S. influence shows it is turning a blind eye to the wellbeing of people in the Taiwan region.
"As the DPP authorities are trying their best to pander to the United States and giving TSMC away submissively, the company has become a piece of tender meat on the chopping block, entirely at the mercy of others. The fact that the DPP can 'view with optimism' TSMC's transformation into an 'American-owned TSMC' shows that the party only cares about its own interests, with no regard for the wellbeing of people in Taiwan, and the benefits of the island's industries. Their reliance on external forces to seek secession will only plunge further down the path of 'selling out Taiwan' and 'destroying Taiwan,'" said Chen.
"Job cuts will not be the only instant outcome facing industries and residents in Taiwan, they will also lose the opportunity for seeking a better future. Therefore it is natural for the Taiwan society to question and worry about the reckless abuse of power by the beguiling sellers of Taiwan like Lai Ching-te," he said.
