The recent restrictive policies rolled out by Taiwan authorities led by Lai Ching-te are acts of terror politics and dictatorship, according to Chen Binhua, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council.
Portraying the mainland as a "hostile external force", Lai recently outlined 17 strategies to counter so-called threats facing the island, including a number of restrictive policies on mutual visits by Taiwan and mainland residents on cultural, academic and religious exchanges, which many on the island have criticized as creating "green terror", as Lai's Democratic Progressive Party is known as the green side in local politics.
Chen commented on the policies at a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday.
"Since 1949, we have been making continuous breakthroughs in cross-Strait relations by uniting compatriots in Taiwan, promoting the transition of the cross-Strait situation from tense confrontation to de-escalation and improvement, and paving the way for peaceful development. The results are hard-earned and invaluable. With his latest irresponsible remarks portraying the mainland as a 'hostile external force' and the cross-Strait relations as 'hostile relations', Lai is turning back the wheel of history, rampantly provoking the mainland, and further escalating tensions across the Taiwan Strait. This fully proves that he is a spoiler of cross-Strait peace and a creator of cross-Strait tensions," he added.
"Lai's 17 policies, which he rolled out in defiance of public opinion, completely exposed his ugly face of anti-peace, anti-exchange, anti-democracy and anti-humanity. His words and deeds were to incite anti-China sentiment, obstruct cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, and to engage in 'terror politics' and 'green dictatorship' on the island," said Chen.
"The reunification of the two sides of the Taiwan Strait is a historical trend and the right path, while Taiwan separatism is a historical counter-current and a dead end. We will never tolerate or condone any act that harms the rights and interests of Taiwan compatriots, undermines the development of cross-Strait relations, and jeopardizes peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. Such acts will be met with resolute countermeasures and severe punishment from the mainland. I believe that the vast number of people in Taiwan will be able to recognize the grave harm done to Taiwan and the people by Lai and the DPP authorities, and in order to safeguard their own rights and interests, will fight against Lai and the DPP's perverse actions and foil their plots," said Chen.
