Military exercises conducted by the People's Liberation Army (PLA) around the Taiwan Island in recent years are necessary and just, said a Chinese central government spokesman on Wednesday.
Chen Binhua, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, made the statement at a press conference in Beijing in response to questions about the purpose of the drills, emphasizing that the provocation by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities and separatist forces colluding with external forces to seek secession is the root cause of cross-Strait tensions.
"We have a strong will, full confidence and sufficient capability to thwart any form of secessionist plots, safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and unswervingly advance the great cause of national reunification. The PLA drills around the Taiwan Island are a deterrent and punishment for secessionist plots and interference by external forces, and a necessary and just move to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity," Chen told reporters.
