U.S. tariff policies serve no-one’s interests: experts

      2025-04-21 15:58 Last Updated At:18:57

U.S. tariff policies do not serve anyone's economic interests, said experts at the Fifth China-Gulf Forum in Abu Dhabi, warning that without China's unmatched manufacturing scale, trade restrictions offer no viable alternatives.

The Fifth China-Gulf Forum was held on April 19-20 in Abu Dhabi and Beijing, focusing on the disruptions caused by U.S. tariff policies on the global economy and the prospects for cooperation between China and Gulf countries in this context.

Experts at the forum said U.S. tariff policies fail to serve economic interests, urging stronger China-Gulf cooperation to address emerging challenges and opportunities.

"You don't really benefit from that [tariff policy], right? Like there's a reason that trades happen. In any case, I don't think the U.S. can manufacture at this scale with the capacity that China manufactures their goods. So is anyone else going be able to produce what China is producing and manufacturing? The answer is a simple no," said Salma Saidane, former Goldman Sachs associate.

Aref Al Farra, economic advisor to the Director General at Abu Dhabi Chamber, highlighted significant collaboration opportunities between China and Gulf countries.

"There is huge collaboration opportunities between China and the GCC. Just for Abu Dhabi for instance, the number of businesses in Abu Dhabi registered with the Abu Dhabi Chamber increased, I believe around 50 percent and then around 69 percent in the year 2023 and 2024," said Farra.

Russia, Ukraine willing to hold peace talks but with different premises

      2025-05-01 10:56 Last Updated At:11:07

Russia and Ukraine have expressed their willingness to hold peace talks for a ceasefire agreement, but each has a different premise, according to officials of the two countries.

Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin supports the conclusion of a long-term ceasefire agreement with Ukraine, but a series of detailed issues need to be resolved before that.

Russia has confirmed its willingness to negotiate directly with Ukraine without any preconditions, but Ukraine did not explicitly indicate whether it was ready for this, Peskov said.

Russia needs to reach a peace agreement with Ukraine rather than the United States, and Ukraine should be the other party promoting the peace process, he said.

Peskov reaffirmed that Russia still prioritizes achieving the goals of the special military operation, but it would be even better if they could be achieved peacefully.

On the same day, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on social media that Ukraine is ready to engage in peace talks in any form as soon as it sees that Russia is ready to embark on a "difficult path to peace".

Sybiha said Russia could demonstrate its willingness for peace talks by agreeing to a "genuine ceasefire" of at least 30 days.

Ukraine will do the same if Russia is prepared to implement a 60-day or even 90-day ceasefire, he said.
