Several Malaysian residents have expressed confidence in the thriving trade relationship between Malaysia and China, as Chinese President Xi Jinping's latest state visit injected new optimism into bilateral ties and cooperation.
President Xi paid a state visit to Malaysia from April 15 to 17. It was his second visit to the country in 12 years, marking an important milestone in elevating China-Malaysia relations.
Speaking to China Global Television Network (CGTN) about the visit and China's presence in their daily life, trade and tourism were two of the major areas in focus.
"I understand in terms of transportation and tourism, there's a lot of collaboration with the Chinese government. In terms of transportation, we are aware that the MRT lines and all that -- MRT lines in Malaysia -- and also with the third MRT that is coming up now is the [result of] cooperation and collaboration with China. I'm sure this will make things work better, and it will improve the transportation system in Malaysia," said Tarsame Singh A/L Masa Singh, a Malaysian resident living in Selangor.
Chinese state-owned train maker CRRC set up an assembly plant in Malaysia in 2015, helping with local employment and Malaysia's efforts to expand and upgrade its networks and lines.
Beyond the rail project, China-Malaysia collaboration is expanding across the horizon. China has remained Malaysia's largest trading partner for 16 consecutive years, with the volume hitting an all-time high of 212.04 billion U.S. dollars in 2024. In recent years, Malaysia's tropical fruits such as durian, mangosteen and jackfruit have become increasingly popular among Chinese consumers.
"Definitely, in terms of our tourism, we have lots of Chinese tourists over here. We are happy to see them," said Yeak Jia Quan, a Malaysian accountant living in Kuala Lumpur.
Others mentioned China's fast-developing e-commerce businesses and manufacturing power, saying that the close trade ties between the two nations are mutually beneficial.
"Looking at all the devices, for example, I know, even though I'm using Apple, I know that all of the products [are] basically made in China. It's just designed in California or in U.S. And I think, because of this, we, as consumers, we have the opportunity to get it in a most affordable price compared to if it's built in U.S. or in other European country. And I think that's one thing that China has. You have the manpower, and you also have the technology and skills to come up with this product. I think with this close trade relationship between China and Malaysia, it can benefit both countries," said Nurul Salwana Binti Mohd Multazam Khair, another Selangor resident.
"Yeah, I do from Taobao. And actually, basically, everything is from China. Actually It's a benefit for the consumers -- we have more choices, and we can get it cheaper," said Yeak Jia Quan.
