China has decided to impose reciprocal sanctions on U.S. Congress members, officials and heads of non-governmental organizations who have behaved badly on Hong Kong-related issues, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said at a press briefing in Beijing on Monday.
Guo made the statement in response to a media query on China's countermeasures to U.S. sanctions against six officials of Chinese central government agencies in Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government.
"The United States' abusive imposition of unlawful and unilateral sanctions against six officials of Chinese Central Government agencies in Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government has grossly interfered in Hong Kong's affairs and China's internal affairs and gravely violated the principles of international law and basic norms governing international relations. China strongly condemns such a despicable move," said Guo.
"In accordance with the relevant provisions of the Anti-foreign Sanctions Law of the People's Republic of China, the Chinese side has decided to impose sanctions on U.S. Congress members, officials and heads of non-governmental organizations who have behaved badly on Hong Kong-related issues. We'd warn the U.S. side that Hong Kong is China's Hong Kong and Hong Kong affairs tolerate no interference from the U.S. Any wrongdoing of the U.S. on Hong Kong-related issues will be met with China's resolute retaliation and reciprocal countermeasures," he said.
