Shenzhou-19 crew extends blessings on Space Day

China's Shenzhou-19 crew paid tribute to all those who have dedicated themselves to the space industry on Thursday -- the country's 10th Space Day, and expressed their expectations for the upcoming manned space mission.

The crew, Cai Xuzhe, Song Lingdong and Wang Haoze, have been in orbit for about six months. They conducted three spacewalks and six payload transfer tasks in and out of the spacecraft, and set a world record for the longest single spacewalk by astronauts, lasting nine hours.

Crew commander Cai Xuzhe has completed five spacewalks, making him by far the Chinese astronaut with the highest number of extravehicular activities (EVAs).

China's Space Day marks the launch of its first satellite, "Dongfanghong-1," into space on April 24, 1970.

"Today is China's Space Day, a day that all the Chinese people will remember forever. Fifty-five years ago, the Long March-1 rocket soared into space, sending 'The East is Red' song resounding throughout the universe, and the Chinese people took solid steps in their journey to explore the vast universe," said Cai.

Astronaut Song Lingdong became the first Chinese astronaut born after 1990 to carry out EVAs. He stressed the importance of achieving self-reliance and strength in science and technology.

"Only by being self-reliant and strong can we stand up straight. In China's own space station, I feel more deeply about the significance of 'keeping our future in our own hands'," said Song.

As China's first female space engineer to work in the country's space station, astronaut Wang Haoze is steadfast in pursuing China's lunar exploration dream.

"As the dream of flying into space is already realized, is it far to reach the dream of landing on the Moon? We Chinese always mean what we say. The tougher our road ahead is, the stronger we will be," said Wang.

China is set to launch the Shenzhou-20 crewed spacecraft at 17:17 on Thursday (Beijing Time) from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China. Three astronauts Chen Dong, Chen Zhongrui and Wang Jie will carry out the mission.

"We will fulfill the dream of landing on the Moon in our space exploration. On this special day, we wish our great motherland peace and prosperity! We wish more success to our aerospace industry! We wish the Shenzhou-20 a successful launch! We look forward to meeting our brothers of the Shenzhou-20 crew in the Tiangong space station," said the crew members.

China's Shenzhou-19 space crew is scheduled to return to Earth on April 29.

UN Security Council urges Israel to lift Gaza aid blockade amid famine warnings

      2025-05-15 13:58 Last Updated At:14:07

The United Nations Security Council has called on Israel to lift its blockade on Gaza, where food supplies are dwindling and the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate.

Addressing an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on Gaza's worsening humanitarian crisis on Tuesday, Tom Fletcher, the UN under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs, said the humanitarian situation in Gaza is deteriorating rapidly amid an Israeli blockade that has prevented the entry of food, medicine, water and shelter materials for more than 10 weeks.

"We have life-saving supplies ready, now, at the borders. We can save hundreds of thousands of survivors. We have rigorous mechanisms to ensure our aid gets to civilians, and not to Hamas. But Israel denies us access, placing the objective of depopulating Gaza before the lives of civilians," he told the security council.

According to Fletcher, some 70 percent of Gaza's territory is either under displacement orders or within Israeli-militarized zones, leaving hundreds of thousands of civilians trapped in shrinking areas without basic necessities.

Every single one of the 2.1 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip face the risk of famine. One in five face starvation, Fletcher said, quoting a report from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Israel blocked the entry of goods and supplies into Gaza on March 2, following the end of the first phase of a January ceasefire deal with Hamas. It resumed attacks on Gaza on March 18, with at least 2,720 Palestinians killed since then.

Fletcher described an Israeli plan for aid distribution in the Gaza Strip as a "a fig leaf for further violence and the displacement" of Palestinians in the enclave.

"The Israeli-designed distribution modality is not the answer. It practically excludes many, including people with disabilities, women, children, the elderly, the wounded. It forces further displacement. It exposes thousands of people to harm. It sets an unacceptable precedent for aid delivery, not just in the OPT (the Occupied Palestinian Territory), but around the world. It restricts aid to only one part of Gaza while leaving other dire needs unmet. It makes aid conditional on political and military aims. It makes starvation a bargaining chip," he said.
