China's permanent representative to the United Nations Fu Cong on Wednesday rebuked the United States' groundless accusations against China and its bullying acts at a Security Council Arria-Formula meeting.
Fu reiterated China's principles and positions on multilateral trade, the South China Sea issue and the Taiwan issue.
"Regarding the remarks just made by the representative of the United States, I would like to make some simple responses. The first point I would like to emphasize is that China has always firmly supported the multilateral trading system, continuously expanded high-level opening up, constantly improved the socialist market economy system and legal system, and consistently leverage the decisive role of the market in allocating resources. These moves have been highly recognized by the international community. We urge the U.S. side to stop making groundless accusations against other countries, earnestly abide by the rules of the World Trade Organization and jointly maintain a fair and just international trade order," he said.
Concerning the South China Sea issue, Fu said China has indisputable sovereignty over the South China Sea islands and their adjacent waters, as well as sovereign rights and jurisdiction over relevant waters.
Fu stressed that China's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests in the South China Sea have sufficient historical and legal basis.
"At present, with the joint efforts of China and ASEAN countries, the situation in the South China Sea remains generally stable. China has always maintained that maritime differences should be handled through dialogue and consultation with the relevant countries concerned on the basis of respecting historical facts and international law. The United States is not a member of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, but it often poses as a judge of the convention, giving orders and meddling in other countries' internal affairs. The U.S. has also frequently sent large numbers of advanced warships and aircraft to the South China Sea for military reconnaissance and exercises, and illegally intruded into China's airspace, territorial waters and the sea and airspace near China's islands and reefs. Who is committing coercion and bullying in the South China Sea, and who is threatening the freedom and safety of navigation? The truth is self-evident," he said.
On the Taiwan question, Fu Cong emphasized that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory.
"There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. The People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing the whole China. UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 has completely resolved the issue of who represents the whole China, including Taiwan, in the United Nations from a political, legal and procedural perspective. The one-China principle is the basic norm of international relations and the universal consensus of the international community. It is also the political foundation for China's interactions with all countries, including the United States, and this cannot be challenged. I hope the United States won't play with fire," he said.
After the meeting, Fu once again emphasized that in response to the U.S.' smear and false claims concerning China, the truth is self-evident.
"The claims of the United States are first and foremost weak and feeble and second, many of them are groundless. Of course, U.S. diplomats have always unreasonably smeared China on occasions like the United Nations meetings. This was just another their routine show, and we have given them a strong refutation. I think the international community is well aware of the U.S. smear and false claims against China's positions. The United States can't deceive the international community. Just as we said, the truth speaks for itself, " he said.
