Chinese envoy calls on Syria to restore stability, embark on peaceful development

A Chinese envoy to the United Nations (UN) on Friday expressed the hope that Syria will soon restore stability and embark on a path of peaceful development with international support.

Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on the situation in Syria, China's Permanent Representative to UN Fu Cong said that Syria is at a critical moment, and China pays close attention to the development of the situation in Syria.

China expects a broadly-based and inclusive political transition in Syria, and hopes that all parties can proceed from the long-term interests of the nation and people, achieve internal reconciliation through dialogue and consultation, and find a reconstruction plan that conforms to the will of the people, under the principles outlined in Security Council resolution 2254, said Fu, adding that the rights of all Syrians should be protected.

China supports UN to play its role in Syria's political transition, Fu said.

Fu also voiced China's concerns over frequent terrorist activities in Syria, urging Syria to fulfill its counter-terrorism obligations.

"UN Security Council's resolutions on counter-terrorism must be fully and effectively implemented, without double standards, as any sheltering or indulgence will eventually lead to grave consequences. We urge Syrian interim authorities to fully fulfill its counter-terrorism obligations and take all necessary measure to combat all terrorist organizations listed by the Security Council, including the Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM), also known as the Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP)," said Fu.

China strongly condemned Israel's airstrikes in southern Syria, said Fu.

Syria's sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity must be respected, and foreign troops must end their illegal presence in Syria, he added.

Fu also reaffirmed China's commitment to a friendly and cooperative policy towards Syria, non-interference in Syria's internal affairs, and respect for the choice of the Syrian people.

He said that China is willing to work with the international community and continue to make unremitting efforts to promote long-term peace and stability in Syria and restore peace and stability in the Middle East.
