China's construction of renewable energy paradigm maintains momentum in 2023: report

China's construction of a national renewable energy paradigm maintained momentum in 2023, with major projects gaining substantial progress in the past year, according to the China Renewable Energy Development Report 2023 released on Friday.

The report shows that in 2023, the combined capacity of conventional hydropower stations under construction in China reached approximately 30 million kilowatts, with a cascade development pattern being formed.

Meanwhile, onshore wind power and centralized photovoltaic projects were being built into big bases, while the electrochemical energy storage sector registered large-scale development.

"Later, China will orderly promote the development of hydropower in major river basins, accelerate the construction of new energy bases, facilitate the development of distributed renewable energy, and increase the supply of renewable energy," said Zhang Yiguo, deputy director of China Renewable Energy Engineering Institute.

The report also says that China will further promote the integrated development of hydroelectricity, wind power and photovoltaic power, in order to achieve a coordinated development for different types of renewable energy and raise the level of resources exploitation and the efficiency of their utilization.

"The next step is to establish and improve an operating mechanism and electricity price policy for the integrated development of hydroelectricity, wind power and photovoltaic power, so as to set up a new production, delivery, consumption and absorption system entirely for renewable energies," said Li Sheng, director of China Renewable Energy Engineering Institute.

The report predicts that the scale of China's renewable energy output will remain at a high level in 2024.

The report also says that the production scale of conventional hydropower and pumped storage are expected to reach six million kilowatts. The grid-connected installed capacity of wind power will be about 70 million kilowatts, with solar power generation adding another 190 million kilowatts.
