China's ports are estimated to have handled 8.57 billion tons of cargo in the first six months of 2024, up 4.6 percent year on year, according to statistics from the Ministry of Transport.

According to the data, the waterway freight turnover accounted for 54 percent in China's comprehensive transportation system.

Statistics also show that in the first half of this year, the estimated rail-water intermodal transportation volume of containers at the ports in the country was expected to exceed five million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), up about 17 percent year on year.

Intermodal transportation uses the same load unit, such as containers, when using multiple means of transportation to reduce transshipment time and increase efficiency. China has set a goal of exceeding 15 percent annual growth in rail-water intermodal container traffic at major ports by 2025 in its action plan.
