Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday called for breaking new ground in ecological conservation and high-quality development of the Yellow River basin.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks when he convened a symposium in Lanzhou, capital of northwest China's Gansu Province.

At the symposium, Xi listened to work reports and suggestions from the director of China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and Party heads of Gansu, Shaanxi and Henan provinces, and then delivered an important speech.

In his speech, Xi hailed the achievements made since the CPC Central Committee put forward the Yellow River ecological conservation and high-quality development strategy.

He said that many highlights, such as the improvement in local environment, water security, food security and energy security, have elevated the cause of ecological conservation and high-quality development in the Yellow River basin to a higher starting point, but warned that there are still issues that need to be solved with more efforts. The Chinese president stressed the need to continuously improve the comprehensive and coordinated ecological protection efforts in the Yellow River basin, so as to build a national system of ecological security shields.

Xi called for the implementation of the most strict system for water resource protection and utilization, and a higher level of water resource conservation and intensive utilization.

The disaster prevention and reduction system should be further improved to ensure the safety of the Yellow River, Xi stressed. Xi pointed out that it is necessary to promote a comprehensive green transformation of the development mode, and build a modern industrial system with special advantages in the Yellow River basin.

Xi emphasized the need to comprehensively deepen reform and expand opening-up to add impetus to high-quality development in the region.

New urbanization and rural revitalization should be advanced in a coordinated way to steadily improve people's well-being, Xi pointed out.

Stressing that the Yellow River basin is an important birthplace of the Chinese nation and Chinese civilization, Xi said it is necessary to protect and promote the Yellow River culture and pass on the heritage of history, civilization, and the Chinese nation. Xi urged more guidance and support for coordinated regional development from the central government, and more efforts from provinces and regions along the Yellow River.

He also called on local authorities to earnestly implement the CPC Central Committee's deployment and major measures for economic work, and strive to achieve this year's development targets. Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang also delivered a speech at the symposium, and urged efforts in green development, promoting new quality productive forces, and comprehensively deepening reform and opening up, saying they will inject strong impetus and vitality into ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River basin.

China has seen a sharp surge in interregional passenger trips in the three-day Mid-Autumn Festival which ends on Tuesday, with the total number of passenger trips in the entire holiday season expected to reach a record high of more than 600 million, according to the latest official data released by the Ministry of Transport.

Mid-Autumn Festival is traditionally a cherished occasion for family reunions, sparking an annual wave of travel to see loved ones or simply to enjoy time off from work and studies. The holiday runs from Sept 15 to 17 this year.

The data from the Ministry of Transport show that during the three-day holiday, the average daily interregional passenger flow is expected to exceed 205 million, an increase of 28.2 percent over the same period of 2023. In particular, the railway passenger volume is expected to exceed 42.99 million.

As the impact of Typhoon Bebinca weakens, passenger train services on the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway, Shanghai-Kunming High-Speed Railway, Hangzhou-Shenzhen High-Speed Railway and other lines have gradually resumed operation. Railway authorities in many places have launched special tourist train services with festival-related themes, promoting integrated development of "railway + cultural tourism".

Regarding highway transportation, the travel flow shows a tidal trait, mainly for short- and medium-distance self-driving. New energy vehicles account for more than half of the highway travel flow. In areas with concentrated charging demand such as scenic spots and highway service areas, transportation, electricity and other departments have enhanced efforts in services to ensure that car owners can charge their vehicles in a safe and orderly manner.

During the holiday, the civil aviation sector is expected to handle a total of 5.1116 million passenger trips nationwide, with popular routes concentrated between the four major city clusters of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region in north China, the Yangtze River Delta in east China, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao area in south China, and the Chengdu-Chongqing region in southwest China.

As of early morning on Tuesday, the inbound and outbound passenger flow at the Guangzhou Baiyun Airport exceeded 10 million, a year-on-year increase of 19 percent, a record high in the past five years.
