China will work with other countries to establish global governance of intellectual property, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said in Beijing on Tuesday.

The 2024 International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI) World Congress, themed "Balanced protection and innovative development of IP rights", opened in Hangzhou, east China's Zhejiang Province on Saturday. It gathered together about 2,300 professionals from 92 countries and regions. It also marks the first time the AIPPI has held its Congress in China during its 127-year history.

When commenting the event, co-hosted by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade and the association, Lin Jian, the spokesman, said that it reflects the international recognition of China's efforts in intellectual property protection. He noted that President Xi Jinping's congratulatory message to the event underscores China's commitment to this important area.

China is the first country to surpass four million valid invention patents, and has ranked first globally in international patent applications via the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) for five consecutive years. Furthermore, China has built stable cooperative relationships with over 80 countries and regions, with more than 200 active intellectual property cooperation agreements, he said.

Intellectual property protection not only promotes China's high-quality development, facilitating the transition from "Made in China" to "Created in China", but also supports China's high-level opening up, providing a favorable legal, innovative business environment for foreign enterprises operating in China, according to the spokesman.

"We protect the intellectual property rights of domestic and foreign enterprises equally. The numbers of applications, authorizations and holdings of intellectual patents of foreign companies in China have increased rapidly year by year. By June this year, the numbers of foreign valid invention patents and valid registered trademarks in China had reached 919,000 and 2.135 million respectively. This speaks to foreign investors’ full confidence in China’s intellectual property protection," Lin said.

"China is ready to work with all countries to strengthen practical and mutually beneficial dialogue and cooperation, and join hands to build a global governance system on intellectual property featuring extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, so that foreign enterprises can better share in the dividends of China’s development and that the international community can better benefit from intellectual innovation," he said.
