Chinese President Xi Jinping said Tuesday that the BRICS cooperation mechanism is a pillar in promoting the equitable and orderly multi-polarization of the world and a universally beneficial and inclusive global economic system.
Xi made the remarks in his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Kazan, Russia. The Chinese president expressed his great delight to be attending the 16th BRICS Summit in the Russian city at the invitation of Putin.
"It gives me great pleasure to come to the ancient Russian city of Kazan to attend the 16th BRICS Summit at your invitation. This is the third meeting between us this year. Around 400 years ago, the Great Tea Road that connected our two countries went past Kazan, through which tea leaves from China's Wuyi Mountain region found their way into many Russian households," Xi said to Putin.
"Earlier this month, I exchanged congratulatory messages with you, Mr. President, on the 75th anniversary of the establishment of China-Russia diplomatic relations. Looking back at this shared journey, China-Russia relations have forged ahead despite wind and rain. We have achieved many groundbreaking results and found the right way for two big, neighboring countries to get along with each other characterized by non-alliance, non-confrontation, and not targeting any third party," he said.
Xi said that in the new era, Putin and he have always paid great attention to and steadily steered the direction of China-Russia relations.
"The two sides have acted in the spirit of lasting good-neighborliness and friendship, comprehensive strategic coordination, and mutually beneficial and win-win cooperation, and kept deepening and expanding our comprehensive strategic coordination and all-round, practical cooperation. This has injected strong impetus into the development, revitalization and modernization of our two countries, and contributed significantly to enhancing the well-being of the people of China and Russia and to safeguarding international fairness and justice," he said.
Noting that the world today is facing momentous transformations unseen in a century, resulting in a fast-changing and turbulent international landscape, Xi expressed his confidence that the profound and lasting friendship between China and Russia will not change, nor will their sense of responsibility as major countries for the world and for the people.
"The BRICS mechanism is the world's most important platform for solidarity and cooperation between emerging markets and developing countries. It is a pillar for realizing an equal and orderly multipolar world and a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization," he said.
Xi said the BRICS Summit on the following day would be the first summit after the latest BRICS expansion and would be of great significance for the advancement of greater BRICS cooperation, adding that China highly commends Russia's great efforts as BRICS Chair.
"I look forward to having in-depth discussions with you, Mr. President, and other participating leaders on the future development of the BRICS mechanism to build consensus among the parties, send a positive message of solidarity and cooperation, and advance strategic coordination and practical cooperation between BRICS countries in various fields. In doing so, we can secure more opportunities for the Global South and make an even greater contribution to building a community with a shared future for mankind," said the Chinese president.
Xi arrived in Kazan earlier on Tuesday for the 16th BRICS Summit, which is scheduled for Tuesday to Thursday.

Despite complex and severe external challenges, bilateral cooperation in areas such as trade continues to advance, and large-scale joint projects remain stable in operation, Xi said, adding that both countries should further promote the alignment of the Belt and Road Initiative with the Eurasian Economic Union to support their respective high-quality economic development.
Next year marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War, Xi stressed.
China and Russia, both permanent members of the UN Security Council and major countries in the world, should deepen comprehensive strategic coordination, strengthen communication and coordination within multilateral frameworks such as the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, promote a correct view of World War II history, firmly uphold the UN-centered international system, and jointly safeguard global strategic stability and international fairness and justice, Xi said.

Noting that next year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, Putin said that both Russia and China made tremendous sacrifices for victory in the World Anti-Fascist War, and that Russia is willing to commemorate this important milestone together with China.
