China has always supported reform and development of the United Nations and will continue to shoulder its responsibilities as a major country in promoting multilateralism, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Thursday, in commemoration of the 79th United Nations Day.

https://www.un.org/en/observances/un-day Thursday is the 79th United Nations Day, which marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the U.N. Charter. With the approval of the founding document by the majority of signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations was officially founded.

As conflicts in various regions across the world continue to drag on, there are opinions believing that the authority of the U.N. is being weakened, that multilateralism is under pressure, and that the future of the world is facing uncertainties.

When asked to comment on such points of view and on the role that the U.N. is playing in the current global landscape at a press conference held in Beijing, Lin Jian, the spokesman, said that the U.N. has played an irreplaceable role in maintaining world peace and development.

"We congratulate the United Nations on its 79th founding anniversary. As the most universal, representative and authoritative intergovernmental organization, the U.N. has played an irreplaceable role in maintaining world peace and development. As the first country to put its signature on the U.N. Charter, China has always firmly upheld the purposes and principles of the U.N. Charter and supported the U.N. in playing a core role in international affairs. We have put forward three global initiatives (Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative and Global Civilization Initiative), promoted the building of a community with a shared future for mankind and taken the lead in Global South cooperation and solidarity. China has always been a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development and a champion of the international order," Lin said at the press conference.

The spokesman stressed the importance of the U.N. in the face of the current complex international situation and global challenges, calling on major countries to shoulder their responsibilities.

"The more complex the international situation becomes, the more necessary it is to firmly defend the authority of the U.N. The more global challenges loom, the greater the need for adherence to true multilateralism. China has always supported the reform and development of the U.N., to increase the representation and voice of developing countries. Major countries, in particular, should shoulder their responsibilities and push the U.N., including the Security Council, to better perform their duties, more effectively build global consensus, and better safeguard world peace, stability and development. Unilateralism, bullying, coercion, sanctions and pressure run counter to the consensus of the international community on seeking stability and development and opposing separatism and conflict, and will only undermine the common interests of all countries," he said.

Lin said that China will continue to work with the rest of the international community in honoring true multilateralism.

"The U.N. recently held the Summit of the Future 2024, where a Pact for the Future was adopted. Next year will mark the 80th anniversary of the founding of the U.N. As a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council and a responsible major country, China will continue to work with the rest of the international community to practice true multilateralism, safeguard the international system with the U.N. at its core and the international order based on international law, and promote the development of the global governance system in a more just and equitable direction," said the spokesman.
