A Chinese mainland spokeswoman on Wednesday denounced Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities, led by Lai Ching-te, as national scum for denying the historical significance of Taiwan's return to China from Japanese occupation in 1945 and whitewashing Taiwan's colonial past under Dutch and Japanese rules.
Zhu Fenglian, a spokeswoman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks in response to a media inquiry about the 79th anniversary of Taiwan's restoration on Oct 25, this year.
"Taiwan's restoration and its return to the motherland is an important achievement of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression by all Chinese people, including Taiwan compatriots, and should be remembered by compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. Taiwan authorities led by Lai Ching-te have not only failed to commemorate this historic event and but repeatedly propagated and glorified Taiwan's colonial past under Dutch and Japanese rules in order to shape a historical view of 'Taiwan Independence' and fabricate a historical basis for their new 'two states' theory. This is a flagrant denial of the outcomes of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, a grave dishonor to the sacrifices of Chinese compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, and a typical example of betrayal to the ancestors and the motherland, and a disgrace to the nation," said Zhu.
"Recently, various groups and public figures from all sectors of society in Taiwan have gathered to commemorate this significant historical event by paying tribute to martyrs' heroic deeds, expressing the historical achievements of our people on both sides of the strait in jointly resisting foreign aggression and carrying forward the great spirit of resisting aggression. Taiwan compatriots revere their ancestry and love their homeland. We hope that our Taiwan compatriots, while safeguarding the overall interests of the Chinese nation, have a sound understanding of history and of our nation and country, firmly opposing separatist activities aimed at 'Taiwan Independence,' working together with people on the mainland to uphold cross-Strait peace and stability, and pursue the beautiful future of peaceful reunification, and sharing the dignity and triumph of being Chinese," said Zhu.
