Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Monday that China and Britain should jointly write the next chapter of healthy and stable development of bilateral relations and better reflect the value of the era and global significance of the bilateral relationship.
Xi made the remarks when meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on the sidelines of the 19th G20 Leaders' Summit in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro.
"Currently, the world is in a period of turbulence and transformation. As permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and major world economies, both China and the UK bear the responsibility of advancing the development of their respective countries, while also shouldering the duty of addressing global challenges. Both sides should aim to better promote development, serve the people, and benefit the world. The two countries should uphold the strategic partnership, adhere to mutual respect, open cooperation, exchange and mutual learning, and achieve mutual benefits and win-win outcomes. This will open up new prospects for China-UK relations amidst global changes, and better reflect the value of the era and global significance of the bilateral relationship," Xi said.
For his part, Starmer said he was pleased to have an opportunity to meet Xi in person after holding phone talks with the Chinese president back in August. He said that an enduring and strong bilateral relationship is vital not only for the two countries but also for the world at large.
"A strong UK-China relationship is important for both of our countries. We want our relations to be consistent, durable, respectful, as we have agreed. Avoid surprises where possible, and strengthen dialogue should provide stronger understanding," Starmer said.
The two-day G20 Summit opened on Monday under the theme of "Building a just world and a sustainable planet".
China, UK should write next chapter of healthy, stable development of relations: Xi
China-Australia relations have achieved a turnaround and are maintaining a positive momentum of development, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Monday.
Xi made the remarks when meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on the sidelines of the 19th G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
The Chinese president said he was happy to again meet with Albanese and noted that he paid a state visit to Australia exactly 10 years ago.
"Over the past decade, China-Australia relations have made some progress, but also experienced some twists and turns, which have given us some perspectives. Currently, China-Australia relations have achieved a turnaround and are maintaining a positive momentum of development, bringing tangible benefits to the people of both countries. This is the result of the two sides working together in the same direction, which is worth cherishing. I am ready to work with you to build a more mature, stable, and fruitful comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Australia and inject more stability and certainty into the region and the world at large," said Xi.
Albanese said he was pleased to meet with Xi again while highlighting the encouraging progress made in the stabilization of the bilateral relations.
"There has been further encouraging progress in the stabilization of our relationship. We live in the fastest-growing region of the world in human history, and the rise of China has contributed to this while lifting the living standards of hundreds of millions of people through increased economic activity," said the Australian prime minister.
Xi arrived in Brazil on Sunday to attend the G20 summit scheduled for Monday and Tuesday and pay a state visit at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Created in 1999, the G20 is a main forum for international cooperation on financial and economic issues and comprises 19 countries plus the European Union (EU) and the African Union (AU).
