Heavy snow blanketed parts of the northeast of China on Tuesday, forcing many highways to close and upsetting travelers.
The snow began to hit many areas in Jilin Province on Monday night, prompting the closure of 15 highways by 09:00 on Tuesday. Restrictions were also imposed on coach buses with eight seats and more, trucks that transport hazardous chemicals, and over-sized cargo vehicles across eight highways.
While local authorities have worked overnight to clear the snow, the snowy weather is expected to continue.
In neighboring Heilongjiang Province, severe rain and snow, accompanied by strong winds and a temperature drop, have forced the local meteorological bureau to issue a red alert for blizzards and activate a Level III emergency response.
As of Tuesday morning, 28 weather stations in the province reported snowfall exceeding 10 millimeters, with the maximum snowfall recorded in Zhaozhou, a county in Daqing City, at 16.2 millimeters.
The heavy snowfall is expected to persist until Wednesday, with some areas experiencing blizzards. Local emergency services are on high alert, and residents are urged to stay safe and avoid unnecessary travel.
