A local official promoted the historic port city of Quanzhou in east China's Fujian Province at the 12th Global Video Media Forum (VMF), while welcoming global media professionals to visit the city.

Quanzhou, known as a bustling historic trading hub and the starting point of the ancient Maritime Silk Road, has again sought to connect the world by serving as the host city for the VMF, which brought together international media figures to discuss the latest industry trends.

The forum was held on Tuesday and Wednesday in Quanzhou, gathering 200 representatives from mainstream media and international organizations from over 60 countries and regions.

In a keynote speech at the event's opening ceremony, Zhang Yigong, secretary of the Quanzhou Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), highlighted the historical and cultural significance of Quanzhou, noting the city has been added on the UNESCO World Heritage list as an "Emporium of the World in Song-Yuan China."

Every year Quanzhou attracts over 300 foreign media outlets for communication projects and exchanges, Zhang said, adding that he looks forward to further collaborating with global media to make the city's voice heard.

Zhang also pointed to the international success of the documentary "Return to Zai Tun", which was broadcast in over 170 countries and regions worldwide in 43 languages. Co-produced by the National Geographic Channel, it tells the story of the city's growth into a major Eastern trading hub during the 10th to 14th centuries.

Local authorities have also extensively invited media friends, experts from the think tanks of the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, and others to visit Quanzhou, Zhang said.

In addition, the official said that the visibility and reputation of Quanzhou continues to rise, noting the city has launched a series of international communication activities and has established the "Tongyuan News Award," which solicits outstanding international communication projects and news works promoting Quanzhou from around the world.

Hosted by the CCTV Video News Agency (CCTV+), this year's VMF was held under the theme "Intelligence Without Frontiers, Vision Beyond The Horizon -- Media's Role in Communication and Cultural Exchange," and saw in-depth discussions on the application and governance of artificial intelligence technologies in the media sector.

Launched by CCTV+ in 2011, the VMF has grown into a premier platform for media professionals from around the world to discuss the latest trends in video content communication and innovation, and aims to foster greater interaction and collaboration between domestic and international media.
