Chinese President Xi Jinping's New Year message on Tuesday resonated deeply with individuals from all walks of life in China, encouraging them to open up broader prospects for Chinese modernization.

Delivering the message on New Year's eve, Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, said that dreams and wishes may seem distant, but they can be fulfilled with dedicated pursuit.

He said that on the new journey of Chinese modernization, everyone is a key actor, every effort counts, and every ray of light shines.

Responding to Xi's address, people interviewed by China Central Television expressed their confidence and readiness to work hard on the new journey. "General Secretary Xi's New Year message is full of deep concern for the people of all ethnic groups, we feel very warm. Under the leadership of the General Secretary, our snowy plateau has undergone great changes. In 2025, we will bear in mind the General Secretary's instructions, and always put the people's problems, big or small, first, and make all-out efforts to create a more prosperous life," said Sonam Wangdu, an official in Lhasa City of southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region.

"Before this year's spring ploughing, we will purchase a large high-end intelligent corn harvester. I will work hard with my fellow villagers and take solid steps on the path to agricultural modernization to make contributions to ensuring food supply for the Chinese people," said farmer Li Baozhong from northeast China's Heilongjiang Province.

"General Secretary Xi said in his New Year message that coordinated development across regions has gained stronger momentum. As 2025 marks the last year of the 14th Five-year Plan period, we will focus on high-quality development, push for major breakthroughs in the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta, and give better play to the region's role as a pioneer, leader and driver for development," said Gu Jun, director of the Regional Cooperation Office of the Yangtze River Delta.

Xi also mentioned China's major achievements in science and technology in the past year in his speech, which encouraged scientific researchers to make greater efforts in their exploration and innovation with greater efforts.

"In the New Year message, President Xi said the Antarctic Qinling Station is now in operation on the frozen continent, which makes us very proud. In the new year, all staff members of the station will continue to work with a high sense of responsibility and mission to ensure the successful completion of all investigation tasks, and make new and greater contributions to the understanding, protection and utilization of the Antarctic," said Wang Zhechao, chief of China's 41st Antarctic Expedition at the Qinling Station.

"President Xi mentioned in the message that the Chang'e-6 lunar probe collected samples from the far side of the moon in 2024. As a member of China's space industry, I'm greatly encouraged. We are carrying out research and testing work on deep space exploration and heavy rocket engines. We will bear in mind the General Secretary's instructions and contribute our efforts to the smooth implementation of these major space projects," said Zhang Wei from the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.

People's livelihood is the top priority of Chinese modernization. In 2024, Xi visited many places across the country to learn about people's living condition.

"On June 18 last year, President Xi came to our school to visit all the teachers and students, and expressed his high hopes for us young students. In the new year, I will study hard and make great efforts. Dreams and wishes may be distant, but they can be fulfilled with dedicated pursuit. I believe I will realize my dream," said Konchok Drolma, a student from Guoluo Xining Minzu Middle School in Xining City, northwest China's Qinghai Province.

"President Xi expressed his concern for people in disaster-stricken areas in the New Year message. In the face of floods, typhoons and other natural disasters, Party members and cadres led all people to unite with solidarity and mutual help, and drove away the fear in people's hearts. Working at the grassroots level, we should serve the people wholeheartedly. As long as we all work together, we'll be able to build a better home," said village official Wang Lili from flood-affected Huludao City in northeast China's Liaoning Province.

As China enters the new year, the country is committed to the construction of major projects and the promotion of reform and opening up.

"President Xi said that on the new journey of Chinese modernization, everyone is a key actor, which made me very proud and warmed my heart. The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge we are building will soon be completed around the Spring Festival, and become the world's tallest bridge. We will definitely complete the project with great care and high quality, so as to realize the beautiful vision of Chinese modernization on the mountains and rivers of our motherland," said construction worker Li Pingan.

"General Secretary Xi said in the message that people in all fields -- workers, builders and entrepreneurs, among others -- are working hard to fulfill their dreams. In 2024, we achieve the goal of exceeding 10 million TEUs of annual container throughput at the Meishan port area of the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port. In 2025, I will build a smart port together with my team members and contribute to the development of the port," said crane driver Wu Qifei.

"This year, we will turn the whole island of Hainan into a separate customs zone. We should always move forward in the direction guided by General Secretary Xi, continuously deepen the integrated innovation of the customs supervision system, and strive to make the Hainan Free Trade Port an important gateway leading China's opening up to the outside world in the new era," said Gao Ruifeng, director general of the Haikou Customs District.

Sales of traditional delicacies surge ahead of Spring Festival

As the Spring Festival approaches, north and east China are experiencing a surge in demand for traditional delicacies, including vinegar and intricately decorated steamed buns.

The Laba Festival, which falls on Jan 7, is just around the corner. In celebration, residents in Taiyuan City, capital of north China's Shanxi Province, flocked to a well-known vinegar shop to fill their containers with vinegar - a time-honored tradition marking the occasion.

The Laba Festival, literally the eighth day of the 12th month on the Chinese lunar calendar, is considered a prelude to the Spring Festival, or Chinese New Year.

As a longstanding custom during the festival, locals bring their own containers, mainly large buckets and jars, to fill with freshly made vinegar.

"The tradition of preparing vinegar for the Laba Festival has been passed down through generations. Folks here love buying the freshly made, time-honored brands, because the hot vinegar tastes especially good," said Liu Xiaojing, a staff member at a local vinegar company.

"The vinegar is still hot. I can still feel the warmth. This is an old brand, and I've been eating it since I was a child. It has a long history," said Huo Yanzhen, a local resident.

Steamed buns with colorful patterns are also experiencing a surge in sales in Qingdao City of east China's Shandong Province. These creative buns, a must-have for many families in the area, are flying off the shelves as shops ramp up both online and offline efforts, stocking up to meet the demand of the pre-festival sales boom.

At a local steamed bun shop, workers were busy preparing 3,000 kilograms of fish-shaped buns. These buns are particularly popular during this time of year, as fish symbolize good fortune and wealth in Chinese culture.

"Sales have definitely picked up since New Year's Day. We're selling about 2,000 to 3,000 jin (about 1,000 to 1,500 kilograms) daily, and we expect to sell nearly 100,000 jin (about 50,000 kilograms) over the next month," said Lu Haiyan, the shop owner.

"Older people nowadays don't like food that are too sweet. They prefer traditional Chinese pastries like these, which are made with healthy ingredients. They're good for the body, so we prefer them," said a local resident.

In addition to the offline sales, the shop has embraced online marketing, posting short videos of their decorative buns on social media platforms.

The Spring Festival, or Chinese Lunar New Year, falls on Jan. 29 this year and the Spring Festival holiday will last until Feb. 4. It is China's most important festival and an occasion for family reunion.
