The China-Europe freight rail service saw 19,000 train trips in 2024 with 2.07 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of cargo transported, up 10 percent and 9 percent year on year, respectively, said its operator China State Railway Group on Thursday.

A total of 12,000 China-Central Asia freight train trips were made in 2024, shipping 880,000 TEUs of goods throughout the year, up 10 percent and 12 percent year on year, respectively.

The new western land-sea corridor, a trade and logistics passage jointly built by provincial-level regions in western China and ASEAN member countries, sent 960,000 TEU containers throughout the year, a year-on-year increase of 11 percent.

The China-Europe freight train service was launched in March 2011 as a flagship program under the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative as a train departed from southwest China's Chongqing Municipality to Germany's Duisburg, establishing a direct overland trade corridor between China and Europe.

After years of development, the service now reaches 227 cities across 25 European countries and connects more than 100 cities in 11 Asian countries, with its network covering nearly all of Eurasia.
