China's coastal city Xiamen sees influx of foreign travelers during Spring Festival

Boosted by China's visa-free transit policies, Xiamen, a coastal city in the eastern province of Fujian, has seen an influx of foreign travelers during this year's Spring Festival holiday.

Official data showed that the number of inbound and outbound travelers at local ports is expected to reach 140,000 during the Spring Festival holiday, up 15 percent from last year's Spring Festival holiday.

"We're staying in Tong'an, we're going to stay here for around two weeks, 12 days, and then go back to the Netherlands. We're planning to visit also Gulangyu Island," a traveler from the Netherlands said at the Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport.

Botanical gardens, museums and a street featuring metaverse and other high-tech experiences are among the most popular destinations in Xiamen for foreign visitors.

Many travelers also chose to visit local teahouses to savor tea and embrace the leisurely lifestyle of local people.

"During the Spring Festival, many international travelers visit Xiamen to immerse themselves in local customs that are listed as intangible cultural heritage, and to participate in the modern and joyful lifestyle of the Chinese people. Xiamen, with its hospitality, has established a service alliance for international travelers, offering volunteer guide and translation services to overseas guests, enabling friends from across the globe to experience the splendor of China in the vibrant city of Xiamen," said Peng Jun, head of the foreign exchange and cooperation office under the Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism.

China's landmark trade corridor sees surge in goods transport

The New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor, a key logistics network connecting China's western regions to global markets, saw the transportation of 209,200 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of goods via intermodal rail-sea service on it in the first two months of this year, according to the China Railway Nanning Group on Saturday.

This volume already exceeded the total for 2019, marking a year-on-year sharp increase of 58.4 percent, the railway group said.

In February, demand for freight transportation on the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor surged, with notable increases in the shipment of timber and stone materials from Guangxi, as well as tea and roll paper from central China's Hunan Province.

Guangxi has recently allocated 1 billion yuan (about 139.39 million U.S. dollars) to support the development of the trade corridor so far this year.

The number of freight categories transported through the trade corridor via intermodal rail-sea service has risen to 1,234.

With an operational hub in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, this trade corridor connects global ports via railways, sea routes and highways, passing through southern Chinese provincial regions such as Guangxi and Yunnan.

The cargo service now covers 158 locations across 73 domestic cities and extends its reach to 556 ports in 127 other countries and regions.
