Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities' attempt at seeking Taiwan secession through foreign support is doomed to fail, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said on Monday.
Taiwan authorities are reportedly seeking to replace "Taipei" with "Taiwan" in names of new overseas institutions in certain countries or existing institutions. In response, Mao emphasized that the international community's prevailing consensus on upholding the one-China principle and long-standing and overwhelming adherence to this principle will not change.
"The one-China principle is a widely recognized norm of international relations and a common consensus of the international community. It is the political foundation upon which China develops relations with other countries. The Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. Taiwan has never been a country, and it will never be in the future," Mao said.
"For some time, the DPP authorities have been using the pretext of cooperation in economic, trade, science, technology, cultural, and educational fields to try to break through the international community's unwavering adherence to the one-China principle. They have sought to expand their so-called 'international space' by resorting to various means, including bribery, enticement, and coercion. They have attempted to set up new institutions or rename existing ones in some countries, inducing these countries to overstep boundaries or play 'gray zone' games on the Taiwan issue, thereby undermining China's relations with these countries. We want to warn the DPP authorities that the complete reunification of China is an unstoppable trend, and relying on foreign forces to seek independence is a dead end," she said.
"China has always firmly opposed any official interactions between Taiwan authorities and countries with which China has diplomatic relations. We hope that relevant countries will recognize the malicious intentions of the Taiwan authorities and strictly adhere to the one-China principle through concrete actions to truly safeguard the political foundation of bilateral relations," she added.
