A UN official on Sunday urged Israel to lift its blockade of Gaza so that humanitarian aid and commercial supplies can enter the besieged Gaza Strip.
Philippe Lazzarini, commissioner-general of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, said on social media platform that it's been three weeks since the Israeli authorities banned the entry of supplies to Gaza, which is a tight siege longer than what was first in place in the first phase of the war.
Noting that currently, food, medicine, drinking water, and fuel are in critical shortage in Gaza. Lazzarini called for the lifting of the blockade on Gaza, and for humanitarian and commercial aid to enter Gaza unhindered and in large quantities.
Israel halted all supply entries to Gaza on March 2, citing security concerns.
Israel launched a new wave of airstrikes across Gaza on March 18, killing more than 400 people and shattering a fragile ceasefire that took effect on Jan 19. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said later in the day that Israel will escalate its renewed assault on the enclave and that "from now on, the negotiations (on Gaza ceasefire) will take place only under fire."
