China will take firm and resolute countermeasures and fight till the end if the United States insists on further escalating economic and trade restrictive measures, China's Ministry of Commerce said on Wednesday.
China's State Council Information Office on Wednesday released a white paper which sought to clarify the facts and elaborate on China's position on relevant issues concerning China-U.S. economic and trade relations.
"There is no winner in a trade war, and China does not want a trade war, but the Chinese government will by no means sit by when the legitimate rights of its people are being hurt and deprived," said a commerce ministry official when responding to media questions regarding the white paper.
The U.S. has employed tariffs as a tool to ramp up "maximum pressure" and seek self-serving interests, according to the official, who warned that raising tariffs will not allow the U.S. solve its own problems but will instead lead to drastic fluctuations in the financial market, drive up the U.S. inflationary pressure, weaken its industrial foundation, and increase its risk of economic recession, adding that they will ultimately backfire.
Facts have proven that imposing tariffs on China not only fails to narrow the overall trade deficit of the United States, but also leads to higher import costs, further widening the deficit, the official stated.
The official stressed that in the face of unilateral bullying measures, China will resolutely adopt countermeasures in accordance with the basic principles of international law to safeguard its own rights and interests.
Noting that the successes of China and the United States are opportunities rather than threats for each other, the official said that China hopes the United States will immediately remove its unilateral imposition of tariffs, and work with China to strengthen dialogue, manage differences, and promote cooperation.
China is willing to communicate with the U.S. side on key bilateral economic and trade issues, address their respective concerns through dialogue and consultations on an equal footing, and jointly advance the steady, healthy and sustainable development of China-U.S. economic and trade relations, the official stated.

"The Classic Quotes by Xi Jinping" is being broadcast on Radio Televisyen Malaysia, Malaysia's national broadcaster, and other mainstream media outlets.
Leading newspapers "Sin Chew Daily", "The Star", and "Sinar Harian" covered the program's debut, noting its inclusion of quotes such as "All things that grow live in harmony and benefit from the nourishment of Nature", which underscores the idea that nature is the cradle of all life, providing the essential conditions for humanity to survive and flourish.
The launch coincides with Xi's state visit to Malaysia, the second leg of his current three-nation Southeast Asia tour.
Xi, also General Secretary of Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, arrived in Kuala Lumpur Tuesday at the invitation of Malaysia's King Sultan Ibrahim.
