      The China-Laos "Friendship Shield-2024" joint military exercises staged command post drills on Tuesday to explore new and highly efficient commanding.

      At the training ground of Kommadam Academy of the Lao People's Armed Forces, commanders from both sides used satellite images and other facilities to carry out coordinated planning of operations involving groups engaged in comprehensive planning, deployment guarantee and political work, to guide Chinese and Lao staff officers in judgment of enemy situation and analyses of situations, so as to direct the troops in combat preparation.

      More than 1,200 troops including 300 Chinese soldiers are participating in the military exercises which are scheduled for July 5 to 18 in Laos.

      Focusing on joint defensive operations, the participating troops conducted drills in multi-weapon shooting, unit tactics and combat support operations to enhance their capabilities to perform diverse missions.

      During the exercises, Chinese troops also provided free treatments and medicines for locals to further deepen the traditional friendship between the two countries and armies.

      This is the second time for the Chinese and Lao armies to hold this series of joint military exercises.

      The Council of the European Union (EU) announced a new round of sanctions on Russia on Monday, as the Ukraine crisis has dragged on three years.

      The latest package includes sanctions on 48 individuals and 35 entities, according to a statement issued by the council.

      For the first time, the EU has imposed a transaction ban on credit or financial institutions established outside Russia that use the "System for Transfer of Financial Messages" (SPFS) of the Central Bank of Russia, the statement said.

      The EU also introduced further restrictions on the import of primary aluminium from Russia and strengthened restrictive measures targeting Russia's transport and energy sectors, according to the statement.
