China will continue to support Global South countries in achieving development and prosperity through increased cooperation, jointly building a modernized world that provides all nations with fairer access to development dividends, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning at a press briefing in Beijing on Thursday.
Mao's remarks came as the 7th China International Import Expo (CIIE) is underway in Shanghai. Among participants from 152 countries, regions and international organizations are 37 least developed countries, as the organizer provided over 120 free booths for enterprises from these least developed countries. The Food and Agricultural Products exhibition area has also further expanded the section dedicated to African products, showcasing the region's distinctive agricultural offerings.
"Since its inception, the CIIE has actively facilitated participation from the least developed countries. Over the past seven years, an increasing number of products from these nations have entered the Chinese market through the expo, contributing to the development of related industries and improving livelihood in those countries," said Mao.
"As the largest developing country and a natural member of the Global South, China firmly supports South-South cooperation. We are committed to openness to alleviate development challenges and foster synergy for cooperation, ensuring that more development gains will be shared more fairly by people across the world. Starting Dec 1 this year, China will provide zero-tariff treatment for 100 percent of tariff items to least developed countries. This was an important measure announced by President Xi Jinping at the opening of the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Beijing. We will continue to strengthen cooperation with Global South countries, supporting them in achieving development and prosperity as we work together towards global modernization," said Mao.
