Left-wing candidate Yamandu Orsi from the Broad Front coalition wins Uruguay's presidential election in a second-round run-off vote against Alvaro Delgado of the National Party on Sunday.
His triumph marks a return to power for the Broad Front coalition after five years of a conservative government.
In his victory speech in Montevideo on Sunday night, the 57-year-old President-elect called for unity.
"I will be the president who makes our society more integrated, build a nation more integrated, where no one, regardless of differences, will be left behind," said Orsi.
Orsi had the backing of the popular and charismatic former president Jose "Pepe" Mujica, and supporters are hopeful for what he can achieve in office.
"This is a restoration of Uruguay's core values: democracy, solidarity. We are people who believe that it's possible to reverse (the setbacks of the past five years)," said Raul, a retired architect.
"I am so happy. It is the first time I voted and I am proud that the Broad Front won. It is the party that cares the most about people and in particular students," said Manuela, a university student.
Orsi is set to be sworn-in as president on March 1 next year.
