Spring Festival celebrations in Cuba celebrates Cuban Chinese heritage

The Chinese community in Cuba and the Chinese embassy in the Cuban capital Havana have been celebrating the Spring Festival with traditional arts, performances, and cuisines to celebrate the history and culture of the Chinese community in the country.

Centered around Havana's Chinatown, a colorful show of Chinese art and different traditional festive activities have been staged to celebrate the Spring Festival and the coming of the Year of the Snake.

The Spring Festival celebration, featuring both Chinese traditional culture and characteristics of local Cuban life, is a symbol and a monument to the history and tradition of the Chinese community on the island, according to Marcos Antonio Tamames, an expert in patrimony studies and cultural preservation.

"There was a historical process of Chinese settlement in Havana. Since Chinese coolies gained freedom, to anticipate the approaching Chinese New Year is an activity for them to preserve their traditions," said Tamames.

After decades of observance, the Spring Festival is not only a festival for Cuban Chinese to celebrate their roots, but a large celebration for both Chinese and locals. Havana's Chinatown, the epicenter of Chinese New Year celebrations, has preserved and promoted Chinese culture over the years.

"What makes Havana Chinatown so special? Well, it started as a group of immigrants who adapted to Cuban life, contributing to it and making it their own," said Tamames.

Chinese cultural centers and restaurants celebrating the festival can be found around Havana, with activities in the Chinese Wushu School and the Confucius Institute, and events held by the Chinese embassy in Havana. With Chinese traditional music and dances as well as a fair presenting Chinese crafts and food for people to enjoy, the event features deep bonds between the local Chinese community and China.

"This is not an isolated ethnic group. The Chinese overseas community, also quite distant, has been actively participating in the historic development of China," said Tamames.

Post-Spring Festival travel rush lingers on in tourism destinations

Tourism destinations in China are still seeing sizable inflows of travelers, who choose to stagger their trips to avoid the peak season during the Spring Festival holiday and to benefit from better travel experience and lower costs.

In Taiyuan City, capital of north China's Shanxi Province, many potential tourists came to consult with travel agents to make a satisfactory travel plan. According to a travel agent, travel costs could be 20-30 percent lower during the post-Spring Festival off-season than the high tourist season.

"I did not travel during the Spring Festival holiday and now I can avoid the crowds. I want to visit the Yulong Snow Mountain in Lijiang and Xishuangbanna. Also prices these days are lower," said Yang Xubin, a potential tourist.

Travel agents said for travelers who intend to visit the hot destinations, their costs could be about 20 percent to 30 percent lower than the peak season.

This year, the southern part of China became a popular hotspot among off-season tourists, who said they are attracted to the region by the signature buildings and warmer weather there.

In Chaozhou City, south China's Guangdong Province, the iconic Guangji Bridge has been frequented by enthusiastic post-Spring Festival visitors.

"The buildings here are unique, and we've seldom seen such styles in Shanghai. The weather here is also warmer than Shanghai, which has been hit by a cold wave recently," said a tourist from the metropolis.

Travel agents in Huizhou City said Guangdong Province is typically a popular destination among travelers from north China, with some of them taking the opportunity to visit nearby Hong Kong and Macao.

"I am from north China and I came to Huizhou to visit my relatives. I also want to travel to Hong King and Macao as there are fewer travelers during this period of time," said a tourist surnamed Zhang.
