A Chinese defense ministry spokesman issued a warning to the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities of Taiwan region on Friday for soliciting U.S. support in their separatist attempts, noting that they will be discarded like worn-out shoes by the United States.
Zhang Xiaogang, the spokesman for the Ministry of National Defense, made the remarks at a regular press conference in response to a question regarding claims by an official in Taiwan who said that maintaining stability in the Asia-Pacific region and the status quo across the Taiwan Strait aligns with core U.S. interests, expressing confidence that the United States would not abandon Taiwan.
"The Taiwan question is purely an internal affair of China, which brooks no external interference. The United States is attempting to 'use Taiwan to contain China,' rushing headlong into arming Taiwan, while the DPP authorities took this opportunity to expand its defense spending, seriously harming the safety and well-being of compatriots in Taiwan and severely undermining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. The DPP authorities are indulging in the pipe dream of 'looking for U.S. support to seek independence,' and willingly acting as a pawn to sell out Taiwan and harm the people on the island. Yet, they will ultimately be discarded like worn-out shoes," said Zhang.
