US continues airstrikes on Yemen, hits civilian residential areas

      2025-03-21 13:54 Last Updated At:18:07

Yemen's capital Sanaa saw another violent night as U.S. warplanes carried out airstrikes on a residential area in Al-Thawra district on Wednesday, causing widespread destruction and leaving several people dead.

The aftermath were captured by a camera set up by China Global Television Network (CGTN), showing scenes of smoke, fire, and rescue workers amidst the rubble.

Residents find themselves in devastation, surrounded by rubble and destruction following a night of bombardment.

"While we were having dinner at around 19:00, U.S. warplanes launched two airstrikes on residential neighborhoods, causing casualties, including around nine civilians. These locations have no connection to military sites," said Jassar Al-Qudaimi, a resident.

The U.S. airstrikes were not limited to Sanaa. They also targeted the provinces of Saada, Al-Jawf, Al-Bayda, and Hodeidah, which are under the control of Houthis.

The Houthis, who control northern Yemen, claimed earlier on Wednesday they had launched cruise missiles at the USS Harry Truman in the Red Sea, calling it their fourth such attack in 72 hours.

The group insists its maritime strikes target only Israeli-linked vessels to pressure Israel to halt its Gaza offensive and allow humanitarian aid into the Palestinian enclave.

The U.S. military, which began strikes on Houthi targets Saturday, said the campaign aims to protect international shipping lanes.

U.S. President Donald Trump warned the Houthis on Saturday to cease attacks or face intensified consequences, declaring, "Hell will rain down upon you like nothing you have ever seen before."

China's consumer market showed steady growth in the first two months this year, driven by policies such as the expanded trade-in program, according to the Ministry of Commerce.

Data showed that total retail sales of consumer goods reached over 8.37 trillion yuan (about 1.17 trillion U.S. dollars) from January to February, climbing 4 percent year on year.

With the implementation of the expanded consumer goods trade-in program, the retail sales of communication equipment and cultural and office supplies by enterprises above the designated size jumped by 26.2 percent and 21.8 percent, respectively, over the same period of last year. Sales of furniture and household appliances increased by 11.7 percent and 10.9 percent, respectively, on a year-on-year basis.

China's service consumption also continued to expand in the first two months. The retail sales of services in the period showed a 4.9 percent year-on-year growth. Specifically, catering revenue grew by 4.3 percent from a year earlier. Notably, the retail sales of tourism consultation and leasing services as well as transportation and travel services all achieved double-digit growth rates year on year.

In addition, the growth rate of rural consumption outpaced that of urban consumption during the January-February period. The retail sales of consumer goods in rural areas increased by 4.6 percent year on year, with growth rate being 0.8 percentage points higher than that recorded in urban areas.
