PLA Eastern Theater Command completes all tasks of joint exercises in Taiwan Strait

The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Eastern Theater Command has completed all designated tasks of the joint exercises carried out from Tuesday to Wednesday in the Taiwan Strait, a spokesman for the PLA Eastern Theater Command said Wednesday.

The exercises tested the troops' integrated joint operations capabilities, according to Senior Colonel Shi Yi, the spokesman.

Troops of the theater command remain on high alert at all times, and will continue to strengthen combat readiness with intensive training, resolutely thwarting any separatist activities seeking "Taiwan independence."

Under the unified command of the theater command, the Shandong aircraft carrier task group, in coordination with naval and air units, conducted drills focusing on vessel-aircraft coordination, seizure of air superiority, and strikes on ground and maritime targets in areas to the east of Taiwan Island.

The drills were aimed at evaluating troops' capabilities of integrated operations inside and outside the island chain, multi-dimensional blockade and control, and joint operations of multiple services, the spokesman said.

A squadron of H-6K bombers, armed with live ammunition, flew across the Bashi Channel into open waters and simulated multiple joint strikes on key military targets on eastern areas of the Taiwan Island.

To support the bombers, the air force of the Eastern Theater Command deployed multiple waves of warplanes of different types to the Taiwan Strait and to the island's southwest to establish attack formations and simulate strikes to secure an aerial assault corridor and establish air superiority.

"Long-duration flights and high-intensity confrontations have become routine for us. My comrades and I stand in a constant state of readiness. Whenever our country calls, we are prepared to take off and fight," said Wang Yiduan, a pilot of the air force of the PLA Eastern Theater Command.

The PLA Eastern Theater Command conducted military exercises code-named "Strait Thunder-2025A" in the middle and southern areas of the Taiwan Strait on Wednesday.

The exercises focused on identification and verification, warning and expulsion, and interception and detention to test the troops' capabilities of area regulation and control, joint blockade and control, and precision strikes on key targets.

The ground force of the theater command conducted long-range live-fire drills in waters of the East China Sea according to training plans of the "Strait Thunder-2025A" exercise, carrying out precision strikes on simulated targets of key ports and energy facilities.

The long-range live-fire exercise tested the integration of new systems, the deployment of advanced equipment, and new combat tactics, and explored tactics featuring multi-platform coordinated assaults and mixed munitions strikes, so as to enhance rapid fire response and precision joint operations.

"Following combat orders, we have established direct coordination with the air force, the rocket force, and other forces to enhance joint long-range precision strikes," said Tao Chenglong, a soldier of the ground force of the PLA Eastern Theater Command.

China sees strong spike in Qingming Festival spending

      2025-04-07 17:21 Last Updated At:17:37

Consumption continued to heat up during the three-day Qingming Festival holiday from Friday to Sunday, as China's consumer goods trade-in programs have gained traction, and its diversified cultural offerings have stimulated new spending needs. At a car dealership in Wuhan City of central China's Hubei Province, consumers are keen to test drive a new energy vehicle with outstanding battery life as the province has beefed up its support for electric car purchase.

"The maximum subsidy for replacing a used car is 44,000 yuan (about 6,000 U.S. dollars), which is quite attractive to me," said a consumer surnamed Wan. In Shanghai, the Bingang shopping mall started trial operation during the holiday and provides citizens and tourists with a wide range of entertainment experiences by empowering more than a dozen performing arts and entertainment spaces of different sizes with high technology.

"We have introduced more than 20 different types of pan-entertainment experiences. We hope to create a destination for cultural entertainment-induced consumption by gathering different types of entertainment," said Wu Jiuying, marketing manager of the Shanghai Bingang shopping mall.

The Qingming Festival holiday has also given a boost to the domestic box office, with dozens of films released.

As of 21:00 on Sunday, China's total box office revenue for the three-day holiday had surpassed 377 million yuan (approximately 51.5 million U.S. dollars), according to data from online platforms.

The U.S. produced film "A Minecraft Movie", Chinese crime thriller "We Girls", animated blockbuster "Ne Zha 2", crime drama "Mumu" and police action movie "Fox Hunt" are currently ranked as the top five.

April 4 marked this year's Qingming Festival, also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day, a traditional Chinese festival for people to pay tribute to the deceased and to worship their ancestors. Increasing numbers of people nowadays also use the holiday as an occasion to make spring outing and enjoy leisure entertainment.
