Congratulations from President Xi demonstrate commitment to strengthening China-LAC ties: officials

Officials from Latin American and Caribbean states said the congratulations from Chinese President Xi Jinping to the 9th Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) demonstrated China's commitment to deepening bilateral ties that are characterized by win-win cooperation and yielding fruitful results.

The two-day 9th CELAC Summit concluded in Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras on Wednesday.

On the same day, President Xi sent congratulations to the summit, voicing China's readiness to work with the countries in the Latin American and Caribbean region to push for new progress in building a China-Latin America community with a shared future.

Some attendees to the summit also said that facing an increasingly turmoil global situation, they believe strengthening solidarity and cooperation of the Global South is very important.

"Congratulations from President Xi demonstrate the good relations between China and Latin American countries (LAC). I think against the backdrop of an increasingly complex global situation, the solidarity and collaboration of the Global South is very important. We must jointly seek alternative solutions and new space for development on the basis of mutual respect for each other's sovereignty," said Eduardo Enrique Reina, Honduran Foreign Minister.

"Solidarity is very important, and China is one of the countries that demonstrate real solidarity, not just a certain type of solidarity. We have learned a lot from the solidarity presented by the Chinese people," said Valdrack Jaentschke, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nicaragua.

Other officials and scholars from Latin American and Caribbean states also said that what China proposes not only help promote China-LAC cooperation and South-South cooperation, but also hold great significance for building a new type of international relations with win-win cooperation at its core.

"In his congratulatory message, President Xi mentioned that the vision of a strengthened China-LAC cooperation is realistic and specific. In his vision, we can find a space for mutual benefit, win-win cooperation, and mutually beneficial development, and the space is open to every country. I think the current China-LAC cooperation and Global South cooperation show a brand-new paradigm of cooperation and integration among civilizations," said Roberto Sanchez, former Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism of Peru.

"The Latin American countries see China as a valid option for developing international economic relations and the concept of a China-Latin America community with a shared future mentioned by President Xi in his congratulatory message is a response to the current international situation. China-Latin America community with a shared future abandons the unfair practices in economic and foreign affairs, and so the Latin American countries hold great anticipation for it," said Jorge Eduardo Malena, director of Asian Affairs Committee at the Argentine Council for International Relations (CARI).

"The congratulations from President Xi to the 9th CELAC Summit said that China stands ready to promote the steady development of China-Latin America community with a shared future together with countries in the region. China is helping promote infrastructure construction through the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and industrialization is exactly what we need," said Maximiliano Londono, a Colombian scholar.

Founded in 2011, CELAC serves as an intergovernmental mechanism for dialogue and political consensus among 33 nations in the region. Its primary goal is to foster unity and promote integration across political, economic, social, and cultural fronts.

UNCTAD members oppose unilateralism, trade protectionism

Members of the Trade and Development Board of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), at a meeting in Geneva on Tuesday, voiced their opposition to unilateralism and trade protectionism, expressing concern over the current tensions in global trade, and over the negative impacts of tariff abuses and trade frictions on developing countries, particularly the least developed countries.

Addressing the special meeting focused on economic development in Africa, Ambassador Chen Xu, China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland, stated that the United States has imposed tariffs unilaterally, triggering worldwide trade tensions, with escalating trade conflicts increasingly impacting Africa and other regions.

Chen said that the U.S. abuse of tariffs as a means of exerting maximum pressure and pursuing its selfish interests is a clear example of unilateralism, protectionism, and economic coercion. He cautioned that these actions would significantly obstruct the socioeconomic progress of developing countries, including those in Africa, and undermine global efforts to meet the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

Chen highlighted that UNCTAD members are both participants in and beneficiaries of economic globalization. An open, fair, and stable international economic and trade order aligns with the collective interests of all. He called on all parties to uphold true multilateralism, foster solidarity and cooperation, speak with a unified voice, and resolutely defend a rules-based multilateral trading system to guide globalization in the right direction.

China's statement resonated widely among participants. The representatives of many countries echoed the call to uphold multilateralism, back the multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization at its core, and oppose unilateralism and trade protectionism, in order to create an international economic environment conducive to sustainable development and shared prosperity.
