UK, Beijing take spotlight at China's consumer products expo as guest country, guest city

The United Kingdom (UK) and Beijing are in the limelight with their honored pavilions at the ongoing fifth China International Consumer Products Expo (CICPE), which opened on Sunday in south China's island province of Hainan.

As the guest country of honor this year, the UK brings a unique blend of heritage and modernity to CICPE, which will run until Friday.

With the theme "British craftsmanship in Hainan," the UK pavilion showcases 27 British brands, offering a diverse range of products from classic leather footwear to modern, nature-inspired jewelry, backpacks, and beauty items.

Another key highlight is the focus on healthy living and outdoor sports, demonstrating the vitality and ingenuity of British brands.

These products provide new avenues for trade opportunities between the UK and China, perfectly mirroring the pavilion's slogan -- good trade opens the door to prosperity.

Beijing is the guest city of honor for the first time at the expo, displaying its cultural charm and technological innovations.

The city has shown artificial intelligence products at its pavilion, such as robotic vacuum cleaners, educational robots, smart home devices, and AI-powered glasses and hearing devices.

As China's only national-level exhibition focused on consumer goods, CICPE has eight major exhibition halls this year.

An estimated 71 countries and regions are participating in the expo, showcasing over 4,100 brands, including 65 Fortune Global 500 companies and industry brands.

Japanese economist warns Trump's tariff hikes will backfire on U.S. economy

A Japanese economist warned that the recent tariff hikes imposed under Donald Trump's administration will disrupt the global economy and ultimately backfire on the U.S.

In an interview with China Media Group (CMG), Sakai Shozaburo, former Chancellor and President of Chuo University, explained that the U.S. developed a finance-driven tertiary industry as part of its economic strategy to establish a dollar-based global financial system. As a result, the country's manufacturing sector gradually declined, a shift that he emphasized was driven by domestic policy decisions, not external influences.

"The U.S. tariffs will lead to a sharp rise in prices, and the economic situation in the United States will deteriorate. Moreover, with fixed purchasing power, any increase in costs will inevitably lead to a decrease in consumption. Simply put, goods will not sell. As a result, prices will rise, but goods will remain unsold, leading to stagflation, a phenomenon in economics," said Sakai. Sakai also warned that U.S. tariffs pose a significant threat to the country's GDP growth.

"[U.S. tariffs] will certainly be opposed by all countries around the world, and they will eventually backfire on the U.S. From an overall economic perspective, prices will rise, which can be described as self-destructive behavior. It also poses a very serious challenge to the growth of U.S. GDP," he said.
