Relief efforts are in full swing in Shanghai and the neighboring province Jiangsu in east China while Typhoon Bebinca weakened as it continued to move inland.
Bebinca, the 13th typhoon of this year, made landfall in Shanghai at about 07:30 Monday, according to the Shanghai central meteorological observatory.
After landing, Bebinca continued to move northwest, and its intensity gradually weakened. At 15:00 Monday afternoon, Bebinca weakened to a strong tropical storm in Wuxi City of Jiangsu. In the early morning on Tuesday, it moved into Anhui Province and will reach central China’s Henan Province on Tuesday night.
The Central Meteorological Observatory predicts that under the influence of Bebinca, in the next two days, northern Zhejiang, Shanghai, southern Jiangsu, Anhui and Henan will have heavy to torrential rain, and some areas will have heavy rainstorms. It is expected that the wind force in the coastal areas of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai will still be strong on Tuesday.
Shanghai authorities have gone all out to mitigate the loss and damage caused by Typhoon Bebinca and ensure the safety of residents.
Local police and firefighters have took to the streets despite the dangerous conditions to remove debris such as toppled trees, broken pipes, loosened racks from roads and residential buildings.
On Monday afternoon, traffic order was gradually restored in Shanghai with the resumption of flights in Pudong and Hongqiao airports, reopening of highways and resumption of subway and ferry lines services.
To cope with the impact of the typhoon, the Jiangsu Fire and Rescue Department has pre-positioned rescue forces in advance, and more than 1,230 firefighters have been on standby in 228 key areas.
In Kunshan City, fallen trees disrupted traffic and crushed vehicles in many road sections on Monday morning. Firefighters rushed to the scene for rescue by cutting off the large trunks and moving away the debris and branches.
China's National Meteorological Center forecast heavy to torrential rains in northern Zhejiang, Shanghai, Anhui, southern Jiangsu, and Henan from Tuesday to Wednesday due to the impact of Bebinca.
