China registered 196.66 million passenger trips on Monday, the second day of the three-day Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, according to data released by the Ministry of Transport.

Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as Mooncake Festival, is traditionally a cherished occasion for family reunions, sparking an annual wave of travel to see loved ones or simply to enjoy time off from work and studies.

The country's railway network handled 11.8 million passenger trips on Monday, with most rail passengers traveling to visit relatives and friends or take short-distance trips.

Railway authorities have been closely monitoring weather conditions and passenger flow during the holiday period and have increased train frequency between popular destinations while ensuring safe operation.

In cities across the country, railway operators have strengthened efforts on passenger flow management at stations, enhancing coordination with transportation modes such as buses, subways and taxis to ensure orderly connections and facilitate smooth transfers for passengers.

"We have strengthened passenger guidance during the peak holiday period, worked closely with local transportation and tourism departments, and increased the frequency of public transportation shuttling between railway station exits and scenic spots to facilitate passengers' travel," said Wang Wei, chief passenger organizer at Jiaozuo Station in central China's Henan Province, operated by China Railway Zhengzhou Bureau Group.

Beijing South Railway Station opened several quick check-in gates to reduce the time needed for ticket checking. Under the coordination of the station and various departments, Beijing has extended subway operation hours and increased the capacity of buses and taxis during the holiday.

The daily traffic volume of highways across the country stood at around 180 million on Monday, mainly comprising short- and mid-distance car drives, of which nearly 60 percent were made using new energy vehicles (NEVs).

Local transportation, tourism and power supply authorities have strengthened inspections of charging facilities in highway service areas and around scenic attractions, ensuring that NEV owners can charge their cars conveniently.

Meanwhile, the civil aviation sector handled 1.55 million passenger trips on 13,781 flights.

Flights gradually resumed on Monday after several major airports, like Pudong and Hongqiao Airports in Shanghai, were temporarily shut down due to typhoon Bebinca.

According to data from Umetrip, a major aviation service platform in China, the number of flights scheduled for domestic routes on Tuesday is projected to surpass 14,000, with an estimated domestic passenger volume of over 1.6 million.

The number of flights scheduled for international routes on Tuesday is expected to pass 2,300, with an estimated passenger volume of more than 200,000, Umetrip data showed.

The Mid-Autumn Festival, celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth month on the Chinese lunar calendar, falls on Sept. 17 this year. During the festival, family members share traditional mooncakes and light lanterns.

The Palestinian death toll from ongoing Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip has risen to 41,272, Gaza-based health authorities said in a statement on Wednesday.

During the past 24 hours, the Israeli military killed 20 people and wounded 54 others, bringing the fatalities to 41,272 and injuries to 95,551 since this round of conflict broke out in early October 2023, it added.

Gaza’s civil defense agency reported on Wednesday that eight persons, including five children, were killed when Israeli bombed a school-turned-shelter for displaced Palestinians in Gaza City in the northern part of the war-ridden enclave, which also caused many injuries.

The Israeli military said in a statement that the airstrike targeted Hamas militants hidden inside the school.

In addition, an Israeli drone struck a civilian car in Rafah city in the southern Gaza Strip on Wednesday, killing two people and injuring 11 others, according to Palestinian security sources.

Israel announced on the same day that four more soldiers were killed in clashes in Rafah.
