China urges the United States to abandon its plan for missile deployment in the Asia-Pacific region, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Wednesday, in commenting on reports that the United States eyes deployment of the Typhon medium-range missile system to Japan for "joint exercises".
During the Defense News Conference in Virginia earlier this month, Secretary of the U.S. Army Christine Wormuth said that the U.S. would like to deploy medium-range missiles in Japan as part of its military exercises.
Speaking at a press conference in Beijing in response, Lin Jian, the spokesman, slammed the U.S. plan for missile deployment in the Asia-Pacific region.
"In recent years, in its pursuit of absolute military superiority, the U.S. has insisted on promoting military deployments in the Asia-Pacific region, including the deployment of medium-range missile systems. This move will intensify the arms race, significantly increase regional tensions, threaten peace and security, and undermine global strategic balance and stability. China has repeatedly expressed its solemn opposition to these actions," Lin said.
"We urge the U.S. to abandon its deployment plans. We advise the countries involved to clearly understand the true intentions of the U.S., exercise caution in the realm of military security, and take practical actions to safeguard regional and international peace and stability. China will follow the developments closely and resolutely safeguard its security interests," he said.
