Typhoon Bebinca brings Shanghai to standstill

The normally bustling financial hub of Shanghai was temporarily brought to a standstill on Monday morning as raging Typhoon Bebinca caused massive flight cancellations and suspension of subway lines after making landfall in the city.

Bebinca, the 13th typhoon of this year, made landfall in Shanghai at about 7:30 a.m. Monday, according to the Shanghai central meteorological observatory.

The typhoon, with the maximum wind force near its center reaching 42 meters per second, churned ashore at the Lingang area of Pudong district.

Shanghai has shut down five metro lines and the meglev train line on Monday, which are gradually resuming operations.

The Pudong and Hongqiao international airports, two major airports in Shanghai, canceled 1,461 flights on Monday.

As the typhoon has left Shanghai at 12:00, Monday's first flight arrived at Pudong International Airport at 13:43, while the first one landed at Hongqiao International Airport at 14:11, marking the return to normalcy for both airports. The first departing flights from the two airports took off after 15:00.

Many passenger trains passing through Shanghai were temporarily suspended from Sunday to Monday.

All expressways in Shanghai have been closed since 01:00 Monday, which are still under control. Typhoon Bebinca has moved to Wuxi City of east China's Jiangsu Province at 17:00 on Monday.

According to the Central Meteorological Observatory, it is expected that northern area of Zhejiang, Shanghai, northern area of Jiangsu, Anhui and Henan will experience heavy rainfall in the next three days. Winds are expected to remain strong in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai and coastal areas on Monday and Tuesday.

China registered a sharp surge in interregional passenger trips during the three-day Mid-Autumn Festival holiday season which ended Tuesday, according to the latest official data released by the Ministry of Transport on Wednesday.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of China's most important traditional holidays, taking place annually on the 15th day of the eighth month on the Chinese lunar calendar.

During the holiday this year, a total of 629.564 million interregional passenger trips were recorded nationwide, with a daily average exceeding 209.854 million.

The daily trips surged by 31.1 percent compared with the same period of 2023, and were 16.1 percent higher than the corresponding figure recorded in the pre-pandemic year of 2019.

Specifically, the number of interregional passenger trips handled by railways, roads, waterways, and air travel were 42.573 million, 579.94 million, 1.981 million, and 5.069 million, respectively.
