獨自留下需要照顧的母親
《美聯社》報道，事發在今年2月3日，47歲的女被告傑西卡‧霍夫 (Jessica Hoff) 出外辦事，把失智的母親拉沃恩 (LaVonne Hoff) 獨自留在位於丹佛以南225公里科羅拉多城的家中。資料顯示，拉沃恩需要24小時照顧。

屋內有數十隻狗和7隻雀
警長辦公室稱，當天晚些時候，警員接報到上址調查，發現76歲的拉沃恩不省人事，身上有多處傷痕，屋內幾隻狗在逃竄，還有大約20多隻在外徘徊，另有7隻被關在籠子的鳥。拉沃恩送抵醫院後證實傷重死亡，初步斷定是被狗咬傷。

兩個住所共飼養54隻狗
期後警方展開進一步調查，搜查霍夫在附近另一處房屋，再發現一批狗，合共54隻，其中幾隻的健康狀況不佳。警方指這些狗和鳥被發現處於不衛生的環境中，全部並被動物管制部門沒收。檢控官表示霍夫將於3月27日提堂，被控刑事疏忽導致他人死亡，以及多項涉嫌虐待動物罪。
